The SE Pathways Initiative builds upon a 2020 Call to Action by the SEAOC Board of Directors and draws momentum from local and national SE3 efforts. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7:
- Please plan on arriving at the Disneyland Hotel (located at 1150 Magic Way - Anaheim, California) by 3 pm.
- 3:30 to 5:00 pm - Pathways Cohort Welcome Reception | Meet and greet your fellow Cohort members and Pathways Partners. Sleeping Beauty Pavilion
- 5:00 to 6:30pm – NCSEA Future Leaders Reception (SE3 and YM) | Join additional young members and future leaders of the SE profession for a special Summit kick-off reception.
- 7:00 to 10:00pm – Welcome to California Reception | Be part of the SEAOC-sponsored event, welcoming our nationwide colleagues to the California NCSEA Summit.
WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 8:
- 8:30 to 10 am - The program starts with a Keynote Presentation | The Diversity Imperative and an introduction to LeaderFlow.
- 10:15 to 11:45 am - 2023 Pathways Workshop # 1 | Building on the LeaderFlow discussion, our first workshop will review industry trends in engagement and retention, followed by open conversations to share your reactions and discuss real and potential hurdles along the path of entering the profession. Safari (Adventure Tower, Lobby level).
- Spend the day sitting in on the Concurrent Education Sessions | These dive into technical and non-technical content providing the opportunity to inform and build your skill sets. Visit the NCSEA Summit schedule page for a detailed description of each session.
- 11:30 am to 1 pm - Lunch on the Exhibit Hall Floor (but yes, there will be tables to sit at!)
- 5:30 to 7:00 pm – Reception in the Exhibit Hall
- 7:00 to 10:00 pm join the Celebration of Structural Engineering hosted by Computers and Structures, Inc. | Join a night of fun, your attendance to this lavish celebration is part of your Summit registration!
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9
- 7 to 8:15 am - Start with a Special Pathways Breakfast, meet back up with you Cohort colleagues, shake out the cobwebs from last night’s party and prepare for the day! Safari (Adventure Tower, Lobby level)
- 8:30 to 10 am - The Program begins with another Keynote Presentation: Confidence is NOT Rocket Science: How to Defeat the Self-Doubt of Impostor Syndrome
- 10:15 to 11:45 am - 2023 Pathways Workshop #2 | Building on Wednesday’s discussion of the entry pathways, industry leaders join the conversation to share how California firms are addressing these issues that impact our career paths. Safari (Adventure Tower, Lobby level).
- 11:45 am to 1 pm - National Wood Council Luncheon for Younger Members or Lunch in the Exhibit Hall | Be sure to visit the Exhibit Hall and speak with representatives of industry partners who will be incredible resources to your career growth.
- Spend the rest of the day sitting in on the Concurrent Education Sessions | Continue to dive into technical and non-technical content to inform and build your skill sets.
4 to 5 pm - Look for the Younger Members Speed Mentoring Session | Don’t miss this chance to “Ask them Anything” >> meet with industry leaders and peers to get invaluable insights into the SE career. South Ballroom A.

- 5:45 to 9:00 pm - Join the NCSEA SEE Awards Celebration | Included as part of your registration, these prestigious awards celebrate the best in structural engineering by honoring engineering projects and individuals who have exhibited Structural Engineering Excellence throughout the year.
- Wrap up your Summit Experience with a half day of Concurrent Education Content which concludes with a General Session: Code, Standards, and the Practicing Engineer | Don’t miss this presentation with speakers to include your SEAOC President Emily Guglielmo.
- The Summit will wrap up by 12:30 pm… but give yourself time to say some goodbyes to new friends and colleagues… plan on hitting the freeways and airports for a 3 to 4 pm departure to be home for the weekend.

It will be the first opportunity for Participants to meet each other, SE Pathways Committee and the Pathways Partners .

Presentation and Discussion: Defining the Challenges (SE3)
- What are the primary challenges encountered by students and young professionals in structural engineering?
- How is the structural engineering profession currently addressing these challenges?
- How should we evolve the way we address these challenges?
The data and resources provided in this presentation are based on the work of the NCSEA SE3 and SEAONC SE3 Committees. The presentation will be followed by breakout group discussions and brainstorming solutions. For more info about SE3, check out this short 6-minute video documentary about SE3 (Structural Engineering Engagement and Equity), produced by documentary filmmaker Corey Leavitt in 2017.

Panel Discussion of Industry Leaders: Addressing the Challenges
- What are the best practices currently being employed to address these challenges and what more can we do?
- What challenges are they particularly focused on addressing and why?
- Expectations of firm leaders/where they see gaps?
- What can structural engineering associations do to help address these challenges?
The panel will be followed by an open Q&A session and group discussion.

Younger Members Speed Mentoring
Location: South Ballroom A
SE Pathways is coordinating a Young Members' Speed Mentoring Session. All younger member attendees are encouraged to participate.
A group of 10-15 mid- to senior- professionals will be invited to participate as mentors.This session will provide early career professionals an opportunity to meet with more experienced professionals, encouraging open and honest dialogue in a low-pressure environment, helping individuals to define their career goals, identify or discuss roadblocks, and take ownership of their own growth and development. This will allow current and future leaders an opportunity to share practical insights and to improve their leadership proficiency. Mentees will rotate between mentors every 10 minutes for a total of about 4 rotations. |
